IIS >> MS update caused problem.

Hi

Recently I did windows update on my machine. After the update, I am not able to start World wide web publishing services, SMTP and FTP. When I try to start WWW, it gives me error as follows

Could not start the world wide web publishing service on local computer.
The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error or an internal service error. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator

I am getting the same error when I tried to start SMTP and FTP
I am using windows 2000 Prof. operating system

How do I fix them. Please Help Me

Thanks
JP

IIS >> MS update caused problem. Sounds like the common service shared by WWW, SMTP, and FTP -- IISADMIN --
has issues.

What happens when you try to start the "IIS Admin Service".

Can you report the filesize of this file:
%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\inetsrv\metabase.bin

First, try uninstalling the update. Se4cond, check the event log for
error messages that may indicate the actual issue.

IIS >> MS update caused problem. That size does not look right to me -- it is way too small (it should be
about 200K+). I think you have corruption/truncation of your configuration
file, and unless you have a backup of this file, you'll have to reinstall
IIS to regenerate and re-configure everything in the UI.

If you did not do any Windows Update related to IIS, I do not think Windows
Update caused this problem. Since IIS reads configuration from disk to
memory and never uses the file on disk until it shuts down, you may have
been running with a corrupt configuration file on disk for some time without
knowing it. Many things could have corrupted that file, including bad hard
drive sectors, crashing IIS while it was shutting down, powering off the PC
unexpectedly, etc. It only looks like Windows Update is the cause because
it made you reboot the machine, which then exposes the corrupt configuration
when IIS next tried to read it.
