The Avast folks confirmed that 4.7.xxx had a bug which caused it to eat lots
of CPU time and keep the hard disk busy. They advised us to install 4.8,
the current release. That worked fine.

have Auto updates ticked)?? I am showing v 4.8.1169 for the Free Home

Windows Vista >> Avast 4.7 humbles performance
4.7 was never slow on vista here, vista itself was slow even with no
antivirus installed.
Its one of vista's traits to be slow.. slow as a turtle that is dead.
Fat as pig with lipstick.
4.8 is the same thing... I have seen no performance boost on vista or xp.
