Internet Explorer / IE >> about:blank page and microsoft bar appears on left hand part of sc

whenever I open a new web page, a blank window of about:blank comes up and a
new screen on the left of the web page opens as well. How do I get rid of
this? Its irritating, and I don't remember changing anything to do this, so
I don't know how to fix it. Thanks.

opening up a shortcut and when it opens you get an ie7 windows and possibly
an older ie6 window with a blank? We've seen that before. Or are you saying

LUCKILY I CAN GET ON WITH THINGS FOR A WHILE, UNTILL IT HAPPENS A COUPLE MORE
TIMES, THEN DEGRADATION OF SPEED SETS IN, PROB DUE TO PLETORA OF SBOUT BLANKS
ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN... SO THIS IS SOMETHING SOMEONE ELSE IS

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
