Good evening,
I'd like to know if there's any official available data about overhead introduced by TFS (e.g., to store 10 MB of source files, how many MB of metadata are required ), and about performance improvements in check-out files over VSS.

You might find this article illuminating: http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry/archive/2006/05/17/599817.aspx

Performance-wise, while I can't given you any scientifically derived numbers, I can tell you that I've been quite pleased with the performance of TFS. I can check out 1000's of files via VPN over a DSL connection at a rates of several 100's of files/minute. If you've ever used SourceGear Vault, I think you'll find the performance of TFS to be quite similar in day to day work (and in case you haven't used it, the performance of Vault is awesome).
