Good Morning All,
My question is twofold. I am running XP(sp2), IE7 and OneNote2007. When accesing OneNote it states I have to download/install WDS 3. I do the download, but WDS wont load or start. I have tried numerous times (rebooting, clean istalls of XP, Office and WDS) with no luck. Any suggeations Any help will be appreciated.

Hi John,
The 3.0 beta doesn't "start" like previous versions of Desktop Search. In it's current state, the 3.0 beta does not include any user interface (other than the ability to run instant searches in Outlook 2007). The user interface will be coming up in a future beta release of the product. Because of this, WDS 3.0 beta may be installed and running on your PC, but you really won't see any evidence of it.
You can check to see if WDS 3.0 beta is running by looking in Task Manager. If WDS is present you should see searchindexer.exe and/or searchfilterhost.exe in your running processes.
Please let me know what you find out.

Good Morning Paul,
I checked through task manager and autoruns. There are no entries for for search or indexer. I have even broken out the sysinternals disk and dug through the registry, with no luck. And the download box in OneNote pops up everytime asking if I want to download DTS, which I do and still nothing. Could it be IE7
Thank you and have a great weekend.
John

Hello Paul,
After going back through KB articles, , I found that "terminal services" had to be running. Once I restarted that, the indexer ran fine. Thank you for your response.

Paul,
If, " In it's current state, the 3.0 beta does not include any user interface (other than the ability to run instant searches in Outlook 2007", what reason would/should I run this for until a UI is available I remember reading about this fact in the docs at download, but misunderstood. Actually, I had been up all night having a blast with the new Office2007 beta I DL'd, man that knocked my socks off, enough so that I removed Open Office, I was tired so i missed the meaning of no UI, but I digress.
searchindexer.exe is using 82,924k of resources on my system, what exactly is it doing if it cannot be used (yes, I understand it will search Outlook but that is not what I wanted the search capabilities for). Other than running an online radio station, I don't do mission critical work so when a beta goes bonkers it doesn't really bother me, I just write it up and send in a report. So what I'm getting at is simply this, is there a legitimate reason I should keep it on and not uninstall it until the UI comes out

So, am I to understand that in order to search my inbox for microsoft office outlook.
I just installed a beta of a search engine that renders the desktop
search useless but still uses my system resourses to index everything
anyway

Hi All,
The 3.0 beta of WDS does provide functionality when the Office 12 beta is installed. As I mentioned, the standard WDS user interface is not available, however, the WDS beta is the engine that powers the quick search in Outlook 12. This quick search allows you to search your email in split seconds as opposed to the "old" email search which often took minutes on large Outlook files.

I'm certainly sympathetic to the previous posters travails. I figured out most of this and mostly on my own--but it certainly wasn't an easy process. Trying to do the impossible comingling of MSN Desktop Search, WSD for OneNote 2007 Beta 2 (without knowing it was incompatible with the former), then trying to get LookOut to work, well, it's not been easy. Oh yeah, and then there are the issues of trying to index pst which was formerly attached to Outlook 2007 Beta 2 but now attached as a secondary pst to Outlook 2003. I'm currently getting frequent errors such as this:
--------------------------- SearchFilterHost.exe - Application Error ---------------------------
The instruction at "0x010ff516" referenced memory at "0x00001158". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
In spite of the problems, things are mostly functional. When can we expect an update for WDS--even if it's still beta

I too am getting the above errors, with different interchangable memory locations. Furthermore, I have noticed that when in OneNote, I cannot actualy search across different sections for things such as tasks and contacts. I it will only search the given secion of the notebook that I am in. I think that it has been explained above that the WDS 3.0 only allows you to search outlook. Is it best to simply remove WDS 3.0 - and wait for a new version that will make OneNote2007 Beta searchable

Hi Paul - I'm trying to understand what I can do to reduce the errors that I am getting as mentioned with the "searchfilterhost.exe". Is it a matter of uninstalling WDS 3.0 for now
