Exchange Servers >> HELP! I need VFP 6 VFPCOM.DLL
I am reading yet another book from the Hentzenwerke publishing
empire: "Microsoft Office Automation with Visual FoxPro". Chapter 13
mentions using VFPCOM.DLL. I was eager to follow the examples given.
Complications ensued.
It turns out that there are two VFPCOM that I have been able to
find. One is supposedly for VFP 6 and the other for 8. Neither
package has the file VFPCOM.DLL. This severely cramps my style. I am
using VFP 6.
I have googled and gone through the results, to no avail.
Does anyone know where I can get this file? If you have it,
please send me a copy. (Given the results of my search, I feel I am
safe in asking like this: 50,000,000 copies are not going to be headed
my way. <G>)
Alternatively, I may be misunderstanding something. Pointing out
how I can get either package working is fine, too.
Sincerely,
Gene Wirchenko

Exchange Servers >> HELP! I need VFP 6 VFPCOM.DLL
Hi Gene,
The utility you're refering to is a Microsoft tool provided for VFP
programmers. Most logical place to look for it is the VFP-homepage at
Microsoft:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro
The VFPCOM util for VFP8 is indeed available for download. The VFP6 version
was a bit harder to get at. Typed in VFPCOM in the search box, and the 3rd
passed option was the following:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;188709
From that page there's a download for the VFP6 version.

Exchange Servers >> HELP! I need VFP 6 VFPCOM.DLL
Hi Gene
As of VFP7 the ability to have COM server events trigger events code in VFP
was incorporated into an new IMPLEMENTS clause in DEFINE CLASS and a new
EVENTHANDLER function. We also got the ability to create the whole Define
Class by dragging an COM server interface from the Object Browser tool.

Not the DLL. I had ALREADY looked before I posted. In case, you
did not read my post, I am using VFP 6. There is also a VFPCOM for 6
hidden, but it does not have the DLL either.

Gene
You should be able to use the VFP 8 version from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1529819C-2CE8-4E89-895E-15209FCF4B2A
My understanding is that it is not VFP 8 specific, but has been updated to
support VFP 8 as well.

It's a standard Micrsoft Installer package as used for years on Windows.
Usually these things are packaged with the installer in a setup.exe (or
similar.) Try right click on the file in Explorer and selecting "install".
If you can't do that then you probably need this:

Live and learn. I have never seen one. I had tried executing it
from a DOS window, and it did not run.
I just tried installing it from Explorer and the DLL would not
register. I got:
Error 1904.Module C:\ima\cbs2\vfpcom\vfpcom.dll
failed to register. HRESULT . Contact your support
personnel.
Sadly, that really is the punctuation. When I tried registering
it manually, regsvr32 reported:
LoadLibrary("vfpcom.dll") failed.
GetLastError returns 0x00000485.
On uninstall, I got an error that the DLL failed to unregister,
which is consistent.
I am running VFP 6 on Windows 98SE.

You can find it at the following link:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/downloads/updates/default.aspx
I have the same book and downloaded the VFPCOM utility about one year ago.
Ever since you first posted your response, I have been trying to remember
how I got the utility and I final opened the PDF version (my book is at
home) and found the answer on page 363; however, that information is
somewhat dated. I do remember having to do a little digging online.
As far as I know, the version you find at the link above should work with
VFP 6 on Windows 98SE, which is the same setup that I have. I also read
Rick Bean's response to you earlier and the version on my PC is 7.0.00.9053.
Finally, I used the book to add Excel automation to my current project and
it was very helpful. Hope it will help you as well.
Best regards,
Dennis Longfellow

I have already been there. Someone else posted that a .MSI is an

the DLL.

"should" is a lovely word. It is not working.

Maybe, what I have is corrupt. I do not know.

I appear to already have it. I downloaded it, ran it, and got
"The specified service already exists."
The problem that I have currently is that the DLL will not
install. Other than that, the VFPCOM .msi does install.

First, I appologize for not reading all of the threads from the original
post before I posted my response. I should have known better.
What I think I did was go to link above and then did the following steps:
1. Selected the VFPCOM utility.
2. Selected Download files below which downloaded the two files, vfpcom.exe
and vfpcom.htm. I chose to download them to a folder in My Documents.
3. I ran the downloaded vfpcom.exe which installed the vfpcom.dll file. I
think I had to tell it where to install it. The htm document recommends the
root directory for VFP 6.
Sorry that I so fuzzy about this. It was about one year ago when I did
this. I do know that the install worked and I didn't have to mess around
with the registry.

I had some problems with at least one of the samples in Chapter 13. I think
it was the sample that would create the code needed to pull events from the
office automation servers into FoxPro. I did send an email to Hentzenwerke
about it and Whil forwarded my email to the authors. Although both did try
to help, I didn't have a lot of time to pursue a solution and was not able
to resolve it.

And received.
Guess what? The DLL you sent me is not the same as Microsoft
has! For starters, yours is 77,824 bytes long. The one pulled out of
the .msi is 139,624 bytes long.
The one you sent registered. I was finally able to get no error
on
o=createobject("vfpcom.comutil")
And I was able to unregister the DLL.
I have E-mailed Lee Mitchell about the discrepancy.

I proceeded with the sample starting page 363. I did get the
WordEvents.prg file generated, but it only had two procedures: Quit
and DocumentChange. Quit does fire, but DocumentChange does not. The
example with BeforeDocumentClose did not work at all.
Is this what happened to you?
I am using Word 97 which should suffice per a note on page 3.

I think I had a similar problem but I am using Office 2000. I did not have
the time to pursue a fix for the problem mainly because my focus was on
Excel automation. If memory serves me properly (a big if), I did have a
problem with the WordEvents.prg file, but I can't remember what the problem
was. Let's hope someone else out here has dealt with this.
Really wish I could be more help, Gene, but it has been about year since I
worked with the samples in the book. I sometimes think about getting back
into it, but just have not had the time.
Sincerely,
Dennis Longfellow

Well, I have been digging into it some, because I have run into a
wall with my main work, and I may be needing Office Automation later.
Plus, when one buys technical books, the benefits do not come without
reading them. (That is something that some of my former classmates
did not get.)
Sincerely,
