Messenger API

It's stuff like this that makes me think i'm not as smart as I thought... that might be true, but i'm sure i'm missing something basic.

I want to build a VB.NET app that sends a message via messenger (IM) to someone in my contact list. I can't find how to do this

Is the activity SDK what I should be looking for This seems to build a mini application, not just send messages.

If someone can point me to the right page with a link i'd really appreciate it.

There isn't an API available from Microsoft at this time which enables what you want to do (build Messenger connectivity into an applicaiton of your own). The Activity API is for building applications within Messenger. The same is true with bots. I wish I had better news for you...

Yes please a sample app or starter would be great!

We are still working on offical sample applications. But you can see Katie's blog which is refered to here which has some sample code. Also some users have posted their own sample code here which is good.
