Windows XP Support >> Media Player- no sound

When I try to play a music file on Windows Media Player, a little red and
white X appears beside the song information and a message pops up saying
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be
functioning properly." I haven't installed anything at all lately; this just
happened randomly. Any suggestions?
